From the outside looking in, the hemp industry can seem complicated. There are so many different phrases being tossed around, but they can seem unclear. You’ve probably been asking: How do I possibly make an informed purchase decision? Well, we want you to be able to use your best judgment when picking CBD products, so let’s clear some things up. We’ll start this discussion by answering a basic, yet pivotal, question: Is hemp oil the same as CBD?

First of all, what is hemp oil?

As you could probably assume by the name, hemp oil is a type of oil that comes from the hemp plant. By law, hemp can’t more than 0.03% THC in it. It should be noted that the phrase “hemp oil” is very broad. You see, there are two very different types of hemp oil: hemp seed oil and hemp extract oil. We’ll touch more on these in the next two sections.

What is hemp seed oil?

Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds and stalks of the hemp plant. Since it originates from hemp, it contains no more than 0.03% THC. It’s primarily utilized for cooking and dietary needs. However, it doesn’t contain any of the cannabinoids or terpenes that produce the effects that people seek out when using CBD products. So, its appeal is solely nutritional.

What is hemp extract oil?

Hemp extract oil exclusively comes from hemp extract, which is derived from the plant’s leaves through supercritical CO2 extraction. Since it finds its origin in hemp, the oil won’t have any more than 0.03% THC in it. This type of oil contains all the cannabinoids and terpenes that CBD products are known for.

So, is hemp oil the same as CBD?

When it comes down to it, the answer is really both yes and no. You see, the phrase “hemp oil” is too general for this sort of question. The truth is that hemp extract oil is the same exact thing as CBD, whereas hemp seed oil is in its own separate league. It really all comes down to the cannabinoids and terpenes that are found in hemp extract oil. So, you’ll want to make sure that the CBD products that you purchase have hemp extract oil, not hemp seed oil, in them.

Do CBD products only contain hemp extract oil?

While hemp extract oil is the same exact thing as CBD oil, hemp extract products do contain more components than simply just the oil. You see, alone, hemp extract oil is only a paste. To break the oil down into a usable form, the oil is suspended in a carrier oil, such as MCT oil or grapeseed oil. Different flavors, such as orange, vanilla, coconut, or peppermint, can also be added into the mix. If a product doesn’t contain any flavors, it’ll most likely have an earthy, herbal taste.  Don’t worry if you don’t like the sound of any of these flavor names. Maybe you should consider CBD softgels—they have no taste at all!

If you’re on the lookout for your next CBD product, you should know that it’s specifically hemp extract oil you’re searching for. Not all hemp oils are the same thing as CBD, so make sure that you’re steering clear of hemp seed oil. Now that you’re aware of all this information, you can confidently start your journey with CBD!
