What to know: Is hemp extract oil good for dogs?

Share:

Dogs are more than pets: they’re family members. So, just like with any member of your family, it’s natural to want to help them live their lives to the fullest, especially as they age. Animal medicine is often expensive, as it isn’t covered by insurance, and troublesome to administer. Many people look for alternatives to give their furbabies an extra boost, ease inflammation, or help with mild pain.

Now, before we get into the benefits of hemp oil, let’s clear up a little confusion. There are so many terms flying around right now for hemp oil. Hemp oil, CBD oil, hemp seed oil, hemp extract oil—it’s difficult to keep them straight.

What should I give my dog: hemp oil, hemp extract oil, hemp seed oil or CBD oil?

Let’s talk about hemp. Industrial hemp is an incredibly versatile plant. It’s used for all sorts of applications like creating paper, fabric, nutritional supplements, and beauty products.

Hemp seed oil

It is common to see products made from hemp seed—they tend to be listed as “hemp seed extract.” Hemp seeds are high in protein and contain both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the optimal 3:1 ratio. They are an excellent health supplement for both people and animals.

What hemp seed is missing, though, is cannabinoids and terpenes. CBD is a cannabinoid (as is THC), so hemp seed oil or hemp seed extract is missing the key benefits of CBD oil.

Hemp extract oil and CBD oil

Hemp extract oil is an oil created from the entire hemp plant. It contains all the cannabinoids and terpenes of the hemp plant. In order to be considered hemp, it must contain under 0.03% THC. If a bottle says, “full spectrum,” it means that it still has that minimal amount of THC. “Broad spectrum,” however, means it was further processed to remove that THC as much as possible.

Which one is right for my dog?

If you’re looking to fight the signs of aging like general aches, inflammation, or ailing wellness, look for hemp extract oil or CBD oil. These products are available as both tinctures and chews, so there’s sure to be an easy solution for your pup.

If you want to protect your dog’s health with a nutritional supplement that can help prolong good health, hemp seed oil is a great daily supplement.

How do I give my dog CBD oil?

The approximate dosage for a dog is about .2mg of CBD per pound of your pet’s weight once per day. It’s always wise to start with a smaller dosage and work your way up to the right effects.

To administer CBD oil for dogs, you have a few options. CBD tinctures come in an oral syringe, which you can place in your dog’s mouth and gently squeeze to give them the drops. Some dogs are receptive to this, but some aren’t.

If you struggle to give them CBD this way, try soaking it into a pet treat, mixing it with wet food, or stirring it into some peanut butter. You know your pet best! Your favorite medicinal bribe will probably work.

An easier way to try is pet chews. Simply give your dog a tasty treat that includes their dose of CBD already baked in.
